Put a bit of Life back in the Old Girl...

The first week of the summer holidays was HOT HOT HOT.

My brain told me:

" Hey you, this is the hottest week of the year, why don't you turn your house upside down by dragging out that old desk you've been meaning to spruce up for 5 years, and then stand in the blistering heat for 3 days painting it?"

Me: " Freaking genius plan!!"

So I bring you... this old desk..

This belonged to my Ex-Mom-In-Law and around 5 years ago, she gave it to my girls.  This was her desk as a Bank Manager for over 30 years.  There have been a lot of conversations over this desk. A lot of decisions made. A lot of history over this old desk.  The wood was beautiful, my heart actually bled a little painting over it.  Which is why I decided to leave the drawers as they were.

We sanded it down a little - with a spatula and and spoon (we're not Tools people)

After a whole , ho hum, 20 minutes of boring sanding down with a spatula, we decided to just whack the paint on.

3 days, a LOT of sweat later... we had this...

I'm sorry the pic is so blurry and we have that ugly box underneath it, but I was taking this pic while holding a screaming tantrum child under one arm and my camera in the other.  You get the gist :)

It looks A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! As we live in a small cottage, this desk is plonked in the lounge, so it made this corner look really dark - it is SO much better now, I reckon it's got at least another 40 years of decision making and blog writing left in the old girl yet :)

This whole project cost me a tenner, and around 5 kilo's worth of sweat.  Bargain!

What have you been up to so far these holidays? Are you cracking up yet? Have you revamped anything?

  1. I've got a beautiful old collectors cabinet (with lots of small drawers) that needs the same treatment. Unfortunately (or fortunatly) we were away for that one week of sunshine. Can't do it now, its raining. I'm hoping a sunny October so I can do it whilst the kids are in school
